The referee at the World Cup this time it seems the middle of 'friendly' with the cards.

A red card last born in a match between Serbia vs Ghana which is intended to Aleksandar Lukovic. Serbian defender received two yellow cards with the last one comes after he pulled his arm Asamoah Gyan.

Two others held up a red card for Nicolas Lodeiro (in France vs. Uruguay game) and Abdelkader Ghezzal (Algeria vs Slovenia). Same as Lukovic, Lodeiro and Ghezzal also received two yellow cards before expelled from the field.

This could mean that the players could not dress or make home attractive tekel. One-one they can get a yellow card - or a tail-like tail instead of red cards in the top three players.

French defender Eric Abidal, aware of this. He himself had seen how three of his colleagues, Patrice Evra, Franck Ribery and Jeremy Toulalan directly raised the yellow card after a collision in the game against Uruguay.

"The referee saw things more observant now in a couple of games early. They are more easily insert their hand into the bag," said Abidal at Reuters.

"This is a problem, especially if you see a yellow card, yellow card. Now it's up to us to be more clever in making decisions and committing an offense if the time is right," he said.
Messi and Marta on top of the world

Suitably attired for the occasion, the cream of world football turned out in force on a chilly Monday evening in Zurich for the 19th FIFA World Player Gala 2009. The stars of the show were unquestionably Argentina’s Lionel Messi and Brazil’s Marta, who scooped the awards for the best male and female player of the year.

While temperatures plummeted on the day winter officially started in Europe, there was plenty of warmth being generated on the red carpet as an endless stream of footballing celebrities made their way into the city’s Kongresshaus.

Following a performance by The Harlem Gospel Singers, the evening’s hosts, Pedro Pinto of CNN International and Charlotte Jackson of Sky Sports, extended a warm welcome to the audience before presenting a video featuring the highlights from all the FIFA tournaments held during the course of the year.

FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter then addressed the hall, offering his summary of the last 12 months before making way for the first award of the evening, the FIFA Development Award. FIFA Secretary General Jerome Valcke was entrusted with making the presentation to the Chinese Football Association, which has been recognised this year for its ongoing work in nurturing future generations of players through its grassroots programmes.

The most emotional moment of the ceremony came when the winner of the FIFA Fair Play Award was announced. Recognised for his sterling contribution to the spirit of the game throughout a distinguished career, the award went to legendary English player and coach Sir Bobby Robson, who died in July this year and was widely admired for his sportsmanship on and off the pitch. Collecting the award from UEFA vice-president Senes Erzic was Sir Bobby’s wife Elsie Robson.

Source: www.FIFA.com

Brazil Stil on The Top

Brazil Stil on The Top

Based on FIFA Last update in July 1st 2009, Brazil stil on the top with 1672 point, and second place is Spain with 1590 point, and the third place is Netherlands with 1379. The South Americans last topped the ranking in August 2007, a position to which they have climbed six times in the history of the ranking.

The Netherlands (3rd, down 1), Italy (4th, unchanged) and Germany (5th, down 2), occupy the next three places, but are some distance behind the leading duo. Russia (6th, up 3) have overtaken England (7th, down 1) and Argentina (8th, down 1), achieving their best position since August 1997 in the process.

Of the other countries that took part in the FIFA Confederations Cup South Africa 2009, finalists the USA (12th, up 2), Egypt (38th, up 2) and hosts South Africa (70th, up 2) have also progressed up the ranking. Egypt's improved position despite their early exit from the tournament is due to their 1-0 victory over world champions Italy, which scored very highly in terms of ranking points. Meanwhile, disappointing performances by Iraq (94th, down 17) and New Zealand (100th, down 18) caused them to lose ground.

In other news, Algeria (47th, up 19) and Tunisia (49th, up 2) have climbed into the top 50 at the expense of Burkina Faso (51st, down 1) and Finland (52nd, down 3). Furthermore, the following teams have achieved their best position since the ranking was introduced in 1993: Australia (16th, up 13), Gabon (30th, up 18), Grenada (88th, up 14), Montenegro (98th, up 12) and Antigua and Barbuda (105th, up 9).

In the last four weeks, a total of 119 senior international matches were played: 16 FIFA Confederations Cup matches, 67 FIFA World Cup™ qualifying matches and 36 friendlies. This brings the total matches played this year to 406. The many matches played and the devaluation of matches at UEFA EURO 2008 are the main reasons for the many changes in position in this edition of the ranking.

The next FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking will be published on 5 August 2009.

The final day in numbers

Brazil's comeback kings were crowned, while Spain edged the first of the day's fascinating five-goal thrillers in Rustenburg to claim bronze. As the world reflects on a memorable and historic South African spectacular, FIFA.com looks at the statistical stories behind an enthralling final day.

The teamsPossession. Efforts on goal. Who needs them? Not USA. For a time at least, it seemed that the Americans would continue to make a mockery of such statistics by winning a

tournament in which they have consistently come off second best in such indicators. The unlikely US success story at South Africa 2009, which so nearly became a fairy tale, was based throughout on prudent use of scarce resources. While Castrol Performance Analysts found that teams average one goal every six chances, Bob Bradley's side established their two-goal lead in the final by taking 50 per cent of their four first-half opportunities.

Ultimately, however, justice was done in Johannesburg. Brazil, who registered a remarkable 25 shots on goal compared to their opponents' eight, continued their record of scoring at least three goals in each of their four FIFA Confederations Cup finals to date with a stirring second-half comeback. They also succeeded in rewriting another record. Previously at FIFA finals, Brazil had found themselves 2-0 behind at half-time on eight occasions; never before tonight had they managed to claw back such a deficit. Dunga claimed a little piece of history, too, becoming the first man to win the FIFA Confederations Cup as both player and coach.

For Spain, claiming third place will not prevent their South Africa 2009 story being remembered as a tale of promise unfulfilled. However, La Roja did at least cement their status as the tournament's top passers. The European champions played more passes (2,619) than any of their fellow participants, and there was quality to match the quantity, with their 81.11 completion rate unrivalled across the competition.

The playersLuis Fabiano came into this tournament vowing to score in every match. He didn't quite manage that, but the Sevilla striker's match-saving double this evening saw him achieve the next-best thing: an average of a goal a game. As well as securing the fourth adidas Golden Shoe for a Brazilian, following Romario (1997), Ronaldinho (1999) and Adriano (2005), the brace raised O Fabuloso's international scoring average to 0.71 goals per game and took him ever closer to Romario's final ratio of 0.79.

Earlier, the third-place match in Rustenburg turned into a tale of two substitutes. In scoring a brace apiece, Daniel Guiza and Katlego Mphela made history: never before at any senior FIFA men's tournament had this feat been achieved by substitutes from two different teams. Mphela's only prior involvement had been as a 91st-minute substitute against Brazil, and Joel Santana will perhaps wonder whether the Mamelodi Sundowns star could have been the answer to his team's miserable record of two goals from 57 shots on goal in their previous four games. Guiza, meanwhile - whose playing time before today amounted to just 16 minutes - cemented the supersub reputation first established at UEFA EURO 2008. The Fenerbahce star, in fact, has more international goals (5) to his name than he has starting appearances (3).
The actionLittle Rustenburg might have lacked the glamour of Johannesburg and the large, passionate crowds of Mangaung/Bloemfontein, but one thing South Africa 2009's smallest venue did not want for was goals. The five served up by Spain and South Africa took Rustenburg's tally to 15 from four matches, an average of 3.75 per game. Fortunately, Johannesburg took this as a signal to get in on the goalscoring act. The first four matches at Ellis Park had yielded a miserly two goals, but this average of 0.5 per game was ditched in spectacular style as USA and Brazil produced a truly classic final.

Did you know?

The FIFA Confederations Cup remains the only FIFA men's competition that has never witnessed a first-minute goal. The two fastest goals in the tournament's history - from Argentina's Gabriel Batistuta in 1992 and Tuncay Sanli of Turkey in 2003 - were both scored in the second minute. The fastest goal of South Africa 2009 was Kaka's fifth-minute opener against Egypt.

The semi-finals in numbers

The USA and Brazil will contest the eighth FIFA Confederations Cup final after emerging triumphant from two heart-stopping last four encounters. As Spain and South Africa lick their wounds, FIFA.com and Castrol Insights look at the statistical stories behind the semi-finals.
The teamsFootball is prone to reminding us of its glorious unpredictability, yet few upsets have measured as high on the game's Richter scale as USA beating Spain. Those much-discussed records - 15 straight wins and 35 games without defeat - had given the European champions an air of invincibility, and no-one expected the end to come against a team that had conceded three goals against both Italy and Brazil.
Yet the United States, who had become the first team to qualify for the semi-finals with just three points and a negative goal difference, made history by reaching their first-ever FIFA men's final. For La Roja, the defeat was a brutal lesson that, ultimately, there is only one statistic that matters: the scoreline. Vicente del Bosque's side had 56 per cent of possession, 17 corners, 19 shots and 11 efforts on target - more than in their 5-0 win over New Zealand - yet ended up tasting defeat for the first time since November 2006.
At times, Brazil must have feared they too would become victims of a giant-killing. However, Dunga's side have developed a resolute streak that once again saw them through a tough battle. Daniel Alves' superb late free-kick ensured that A Seleção remain unbeaten in 2009, having won eight and drawn one of their nine matches since the turn of the year.
The playersThat USA made history in Manguang/Bloemfontein is beyond doubt. But how did they do it? The factors were many and varied, of course, but key to Bob Bradley's strategy was the neutralising of Spain's key players.
The top target was Xavi. Spotting the danger in allowing the Barcelona playmaker time to dictate play and pick out penetrating passes, Bradley instructed his players to make a "special point" of harrying the Spain No8 at every turn. It worked. Xavi, who entered the match having completed more passes than anyone else at the tournament, was reduced to a considerably more modest success rate of 77 per cent.
Joan Capdevila also suffered. The left-back had set up three goals in his previous two appearances, but USA were effective in reducing his overlapping opportunities, with the consequence that he delivered just one cross during the entire match. And even when the ball did arrive from wide areas, the Americans protected their box impeccably, with Capdevila's solitary cross meeting the same unsuccessful fate as all five of substitute Juan Manuel Mata's.
Tonight's match in Johannesburg was every bit as tense and tactical, but on this occasion it was settled by a moment of magic from Daniel Alves. In scoring the first direct free-kick of South Africa 2009, the Brazil wingback also ensured that history repeated itself. After all, it was from just such a set piece situation that Adriano fired the opening goal in Brazil's semi-final win over Germany four years ago.
The actionThe dramatic semi-final mix included a milestone goal, with Jozy Altidore's opener against Spain the 300th in Confederations Cup history. The USA striker's strike came almost four years to the day after Adriano had taken the tournament's tally to 250 with that aforementioned free-kick at Germany 2005. Altidore was just two years old when the Americans found themselves on the receiving end of the first-ever goal in the 'Festival of Champions', which came when Fahad Al Bishi struck the opening blow in a 3-0 win for Saudi Arabia on 15 October 1992.
Did you know?Even before Daniel Alves struck tonight, Brazil had developed a long-standing and successful habit of scoring from outside the box. Castrol Performance Analysts found that, in the last 11 FIFA World Cups, they scored 27.2 per cent of their goals from a distance of 18 yards-plus - nearly twice the average of 15.7 per cent.
Source : WWW.FIFA.COM

FIFA World Cup records

Two players share the record for playing in the most World Cups; Mexico's Antonio Carbajal and Germany's Lothar Matthäus both played in five tournaments.[48] Matthäus has played the most World Cup matches overall, with 25 appearances.[49] Brazil's Pelé is the only player to hold three World Cup winners' medals.[50]

The overall leading goalscorer in World Cups is Brazil's Ronaldo, scorer of 15 goals in three tournaments. There would be no such thing as a world cup history if it were not for Jules Rimet, who first took the presidency in 1921. The positive message infused by Rimet is summarized by his famous words "Soccer could reinforce the ideals of a permanent and real peace", as he pushed to organize an international event that would make no discrimination on the grounds of professional or amateur status. As his words were spoken the plans for a world tournament involving all of the federations was being planned for the coming 3 to 4 years. Along with the help of 5 other officials, Rimet organized the event for 1930. Via congressional meetings of the World Football Federation the semantics for the tournament were laid out and finalized.

On May 26th, 1928 the World Cup was born. History was changed forever as five European countries plus a chosen host of Uruguay planned to hold the first tournament on May 18th, 1929 at the congress of Barcelona. Uruguay was chosen as host based on their outstanding Olympic record, and as Rimet was encouraging a regime of international peace, utilizing the reputation the Olympic games already held was simply intelligent leveraging.

The actualization of the event did not transpire until the year later, when on July 13th, 1930 the first game of the first world cup kicked off in Pocitos Stadium, and France beat Mexico 4 to 1. This truly marked the beginning of a long and wonderful world cup history.

The first world cup was the only event to not involve the modern qualifying rounds. The only European teams involved were France, Belgium, Yugoslavia, and Romania. Other European teams either wished to remain in purely Amateur events, or argued that the expected trip time was far too long. Other than Uruguay six additional south American teams participated, including Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay and Peru.
Winners of the 1st World Cup - Uruguay - 1930
Winners of the 1st World Cup - Uruguay - 1930

Two teams remained to complete the final 13 for 1930, Mexico and the United States. The U.S. was utilizing a heavily Scottish roster for the event.

In the end it was Uruguay battling Argentina for the cup. Victory and the first world cup went to Uruguay as they beat the Argentineans 4 to 2.

To see which country has maintained the best record over the course of the last six decades view our world cup rankings page.
